The Panagia Hozoviotisa Monastery
A Greek Orthodox Monastery built on the rugged southern coast of the island, at an altitude of 300 meters. It is built on a cliff. It is 40 meters long and 5 meters wide at its widest point. At first glance it looks as if a huge hand had stuck it on the vertical cliff. The entrance to the monastery is 10 meters above the ground. Access was by rope ladder.
The monastery is thought to have been built in the 9th century
Emperor Alexios Komninos the 1st granted special rights to the monastery by imperial decree in 1088AD.
