The recreational sailboat Koala VI was built in Ravenna, Italy, in 1988, by legendary shipbuilding firm
‘Cantiere De Cesari’.
Cantiere De Cesari was set up in 1947 by Adriano De Cesari.
It was since upgraded in 1954 and subsequently in 1962.
In total it built 364 boats, ranging in length from 3 to 30 meters, and all from wood, except two in which fibreglass was used.
They engaged in the construction of various types of vessels such as high speed catboats, water taxis for Venice, cruise yachts (Twilight, Staphilus III, Quo Vadis) racing boats (Blue Moro, Argentovivo), schooners, and ketch Motorsailer (El Pampero, Simar).
KOALA boats constitute a series of racing sailboats built by Cantiere De Cesari.
In total seven boats were built, years apart one from the next. Each subsequent boat boasted the latest standards in the planning and construction of racing sailboats.
They were all named KOALA plus the rising number to indicate their order in the series.
Ours is KOALA VI (6).
KOALA VI was built in 1988, as a high speed one-off racing sailboat, to the order of experienced sailor, architect and professor of architecture, Pierluigi Spadolini, brother of then PM of Italy, Giovanni Spadolini.
In its planning and design Spadolini collaborated with equally experienced sailor and architect Andrea Vallicelli, an associate of Cantiere de Cesari for 25 years.
KOALA VI took part in many sailing races with excellent performance results.
In its first racing period it managed to win the championship in its category.
In 1993 it underwent an improvement operation by Alessandro Vismara with a view to enhancing speed performance to make it more competitive and get into the top racing league. The modifications favoured the boat and enabled it to win a few more races.
In 1999 it was purchased and brought to Greece by a Greek Yachting Club member and former Spadolini student.
In 2007-2008 significant improvements were carried out to the interior, hull, keel and a new motor, generator, refrigerators, winches and pumps were installed.
In 2016-2017 a total overhaul of the hydraulics, electrical and electronics systems was effected.
Woodwork and deck were restored.
Necessary equipment and mattresses were added for deck relaxation.
The modifications transformed KOALA VI into a Comfortable Recreational Sailing Vessel with the potential for enhanced wind exploitation and faster sailing.
